The eating disorder issue has become a malignant problem in today’s world, thus the need to discuss the idea encompassing Set Point theory as a scientific health subject. In essence, I have selected this topic because it educates people on why they should keep their natural weight and the consequences of trying to alter the required set point in their bodies (Woods 1). First, I would like to research on this topic to make individuals understand that the set point is naturally programmed to ensure the optimal functioning of the body. In addition, it would also be important to comprehend that when the body realizes that it is not receiving the required amount of food, it fights back to maintain the balance. Secondly, the information about the topic would reveal that when people begin dieting it becomes easy to lose weight during the first week, but within a short period it starts to accumulate back (Woods 1). Essentially, the topic would be crucial because the information researched on the topic would enhance people’s understanding of their set point as well as disclose that when those points are distorted, then a myriad of consequences may arise as the body tries to return to its natural state. For instance, the metabolic rate slows down when a person under feeds since the body conserves enough energy for normal functioning (Woods 1). Moreover, the concept of “Set Point Theory” in weight control is significant because the topic divulges that body temperature drops while sleeping, a situation that enhances the condition of anorexia nervosa. Finally, I would like to do more research on the topic to educate women about their distorted set point, which may shut down their systems, especially their ability to conceive. It is worth noting that the consequences of overfeeding are an increased metabolic reaction. Hence, it is only through understanding the concept of “Set Point Theory” that those with such tendencies should be educated on the dangers of eating more than it is necessary.
