Solution
Ph.D. Personal Statement
Part 1: Research Focus and Area of Research Expertise
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is prevalent, not only in Saudi Arabia but also globally. The World Health Organization report on diabetes Mellitus reveals that approximately 422 million adults around the world had diabetes in 2014. The number is a sharp increase compared to approximately 108 million cases in 1980 (WHO, 2016). Research evidence suggests a bi-directional association between T2DM and various mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Alzahrani et al. (2019) aver that considering the close association between diabetes and psychosocial effects, such as depression and anxiety, it is necessary to understand the condition and possible strategies to help people to overcome the adverse outcomes. Consequently, it is essential to study this area to provide evidence-based solutions to the issues of depression and anxiety associated with diabetes. Gharaibeh et al. (2016) confirm that with better self-management and improved quality of life, diabetic individuals can reduce depression and anxiety.
Research Focus:
My area of focus in research is family and community. Using my clinical practice and experience in Saudi Arabia, I am interested in improving the quality of life and strategies to address depression and anxiety. I want to explore the relationship between depression and psychosocial health, especially among people with diabetes. My research findings will contribute to the timely identification of the symptoms of depression among people with diabetes to prevent further psychosocial problems. Based on the areas that CWRU provides for research, I will select family and community as it is directly related to my research problem. Overall, the field is also beneficial because it studies the person, family, and community more holistically.
Part 2: Educational and Professional Goals
My intention to pursue PhD at CWRU aligns with the institution’s mission to advance nursing through research because the program is a research doctorate. My short-term goal in pursuing the program is to improve and use my utilize skills and knowledge to generate evidence based findings to use in nursing practice. The program will enable me to conduct research and contribute towards the development of effective interventions for diabetes use locally and globally. I will use the training from CWRU to achieve my long-term goal, which is to improve the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia through research focusing on Family/Community Care. From the knowledge I have acquired so far, I understand that research is the only way I can use evidence and best practice to improve nursing and health care in Saudi Arabia. The program will also enable me to improve my leadership skills to support the development of guidelines, protocols, and policy for health in Saudi Arabia.
Overall, I intend to attend CWRU because of the wealth of knowledge in health care compared to the Middle East nation. I strongly believe in culturally appropriate clinical practice to support quality and safe health care. I intend to use the knowledge I will gain to ensure ethical practice in the delivery of care to culturally diverse patients. I have also learned the need to focus on the needs of individuals based on diversity, such as gender, age, and race/ethnicity. My training and experience will enhance professionalism in the field of nursing with more passion for improvement and research. Therefore, I will use the knowledge for self-improvement and improve the way health care is provided in Saudi Arabia. I will also become more satisfied with the knowledge that I can contribute to the wellbeing of different populations in the country.
Part 3: Rationale for Selecting CWRU for the Ph.D. Degree and Faculty Research Mentoring:
I am currently a student at CWRU doing my masters in Family nurse practitioner. I am about to complete my studies and would wish to join your institution to pursue my dreams in nursing. While pursuing my Master’s program, the university caught my attention because it has significant applications that will help me to achieve my career goals, such as training in patients, family, and community aspects. I expect to gain more expertise in research and take advantage of reviews from students about the way the Ph.D. program at the institution can enable me to utilize my skills. Since CWRU is one of the best schools for nursing education, I anticipate accessing a strong Ph.D. background because of its excellent programs and a committed faculty. The area is critical because it will help me to focus on the study and conduct comprehensive research.
Faculty Mentoring:
Jaclene Zauszniewski, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN
I will consider Jaclene Zauszniewski, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN as the faculty member to provide Ph.D. mentorship. I have gone through her page on the CWRU website and realized that I could benefit a lot from her mentorship. From my assessment, I noted her eagerness to support learners pursuing a knowledgeable perspective in Ph.D. Besides, the professor’s research concentration matched my interest areas, such as self-management, prevention, and treatment of stress, and depression across the lifespan. Dr. A. Zauszniewski’s expertise on the relationship between care for mental health and improvement in patient quality of life aligns with my interests. Overall, I am sure she will guide me through my Ph.D. education journey.
