Leadership Retreat Agenda
1245-1315 – Advancement Opportunities
In healthcare, it is essential to ensure that employees continuously advance in their careers. Often, workers may experience reduced morale due to the redundant nature of their work. To a greater extent, some may opt to resign from their positions to seek more promising opportunities in other healthcare entities. Therefore, it is essential that leaders identify ways in which we can help our staff advance in their expertise to curb high employee turnover rate and reduced morale.
The establishment of open communication with employees is the only way to understand their career aspirations. Open information transfer can be done through annual meetings in which healthcare workers are allowed to openly share their experiences in the organization, and what they hope to gain in the long-term. Additionally, plans and programs should be established to facilitate the advancement of the proposed opportunities. Notably, initiating new programs is a paramount way of showing that their concerns are reviewed and addressed adequately.
As leaders, there are different ways in which we can facilitate the advancement of health careers, apart from relying on the mentioned annual meetings. Indeed, it is critical to ensure that our staff receive unique responsibilities. Other than the usual tasks, make sure that employees are assigned duties that will help them think unconventionally to enhance their work performance. Secondly, promoting long-standing employees to leadership positions is vital. Some of these leadership positions may include managing and leading teams in projects aimed at enhancing the quality of services provided in the facility. Most importantly, leaders should use the available resources to provide training and educational opportunities for employees to help them advance in their careers.
1315-1345 – Staffing
Staffing is a crucial determinant of the success of an organization and employee wellness. Failure to maintain a sufficient staffing capacity can easily compromise the quality of care provided to patients and cause burnout among employees. Unrefutably, deterioration in the quality of services can taint an organization’s image among patients and lead to a decline in revenue generation. Consequently, it is our duty, as managers, to ensure that staffing needs, regarding diverse issues, are addressed adequately. As leaders, we can maintain a sustainable level of staffing, both directly and indirectly. Specifically, it is imperative to monitor the rate of employees’ utilization in various units, as one of the direct approaches to determine the number of workers required to complete various tasks within the organization. As a result, leaders can adjust the employee schedule and identify areas that require additional workforce. Various options are available to address units that have staff shortage. For instance, leaders may choose to hire full-time employees or contract services from part-time workers. Nonetheless, the chosen approach should be economical and efficient in creating a sustainable workforce.
The wellbeing of the existing workforce can be improved as a strategy of maintaining a sustainable staff level. Undeniably, majority of organizations today suffer shortages of employee capacity since they fail to address the latter’s needs adequately, which subsequently leads to high employee turnover rates. Leaders ought to ensure that the overall well-being of employees, physical, emotional and financial, is covered in order to retain a significant number of competent and experienced employees in the organization. For instance, ensuring transparency in criteria used in determining wages paid to each worker and providing social bonuses to staff can promote financial wellbeing among practitioners. Notably, financial incentives should not be viewed as an additional cost to the organization, but as an investment to attract and keep competent employees long-term.
1345-1430 – Data and Analytics
Data analytics encompass an analysis of raw data to transform it into useful information that can be used during decision-making processes in the healthcare entity. Leaders should be able to identify the benefits of data analytics to ensure that the science is integrated within the organizational practice. Undeniably, the healthcare sector is associated with massive amounts of data, which is often required to make informed decisions in diverse areas. However, the application of data analytics eases the process of filtering of the massive data, thus enhancing accuracy during comparison to manual reviews. As such, patients can always be assured of precise solutions for different procedures, based on their historical information and additional data gathered from other medical providers.
Data analytics is an effective tool; however, it is not widely used in the industry. Therefore, leaders need to provide a close follow-up on its utilization in every stage of patient care. Specifically, assurances should be provided to healthcare workers on the value attributed to data analytics to ensure that the science is highly adopted in the organization. Notably, employees should be encouraged to reflect the long-term benefits of the analytics, such as a reduction in medical errors and enhancement in quality of care, rather than perceive the science as additional workload to their already demanding tasks. Capitalizing on the use of data analytics in the healthcare entity can positively influence productivity and the delivery of care. In particular, the capability of healthcare teams to work together and share information regarding patients can lead to the desired patient outcomes. Therefore, establishing follow-ups on the use of the tool is an essential area of focus for leaders.
1430-1515 – Quality Improvement Healthcare Trials
As healthcare leaders, it is essential to guide our teams through projects that facilitate improvement in the quality of care delivery. Most importantly, managers may need to identify and brainstorm some of these projects with their employees, to select the most ideal and realistic healthcare trials. For instance, hourly rounding to help curb patient falls and injuries associated with inadequate monitoring of inpatients may improve quality of care. However, managers should remember the importance of granting employees the freedom to plan and complete the trials on their own. Notably, staffs are looking for a sense of value, trust, and independence to make critical decisions. Consequently, allowing them to undertake clinical trials with minimum supervision is one way of showing that you believe in their abilities to make sound decisions and achieve the set goals. Besides, the practice fosters a feeling of value among workers, which leads to a high rate of commitment and employee retention.
Leaders should exercise their authority and control over various aspects of a given facility. Notably, they should establish clear and concise goals, effective communication channels, and demand accountability to those involved in the projects. Setting objectives can help guide the team regarding the required oucomes of a given project. The goals are also metrics to compare against the final output. Communication channels are also paramount as they can facilitate uninterrupted exchange of information regarding the progress of the venture. Finally, every member should remain accountable in such projects to ensure that the allocated resources are appropriately utilized in the long-run. Ultimately, there is need for collaboration between leaders and juniors in order to addressing various issues successfully.
