Crime Prevention – IT Security
Crime prevention helps the community to address the crime problem effectively and to save the cost of the criminal justice system by fighting crime before its occurrence. For many years, criminal justice experts encourage stakeholders in law enforcement and criminal justice to adopt effective mechanisms to prevent crime. Although, crime prevention could be understood as taking place in the physical environment, related strategies have implications in IT security by preventing IT and information security threats, and preserve information integrity.
The case study presented during Week 14 of the course has lessons regarding IT security. Th most important takeaway is ensuring IT security is about protecting the interests of the company. IT security ensures that the organization functions efficiently, ensure that application in the IT systems function correctly, protects the organizational data, and protects corporate assets (Whitman & Mattord, 2011). Therefore, IT security experts should identify possible risks, and implement practical mitigation approaches, such as Firewalls and Passwords
After taking the course, I have learned new things about Crime Prevention and IT Security. One of the lessons is that, IT security encompasses attempts to protect IT assets, which include hardware. I have also learned that, the protection informs the need for IT security of the company’s interests as opposed to the IT assets and information itself.
Some thoughts about the future of crime prevention concerning IT security and criminal justice in higher education include, the need to teach and develop sophisticated IT, and data protection tools. Criminals continue to improve their skills, such as hacking capabilities. Therefore, IT experts should also continually improve their strategies to counter criminals. Furthermore, the future includes the need for stricter policies, such as intellectual property laws, to protect the ever-changing technology world.
I would advise future criminal justice students to focus their criminal justice knowledge and practice to the demands of the current and future societies. The society is increasingly changing to conduct most businesses, and other activities using IT applications. Therefore, although traditional crime prevention is necessary, students should also focus on IT security to remain relevant in the current and future careers.
Crime prevention in the modern and future world is a complicated subject with an interplay of historical and contemporary approaches. Therefore, law enforcement officers should understand the multifaceted aspects of crime prevention, including goals, logic, and history of crime prevention, the role of science and technology in creating better environments, and ethical decisions in preventing criminal behavior. The focus should be on creating a collaborative approach of engaging parents, teachers, community leaders, and church leaders to implement prevention policies and programs that work, such as methods that target risk and protective factors (Tilley & Sidebottom, 2017). The focus should be on the individual and community to understand the risk factors for offending and improve on protective factors, such as secure community networks
The most effective way to prevent crime in the present and futures societies is to target young children and the youth, who are at the risk of offending due to factors such as; parental offending behavior, low educational performance, poverty, or societal crime risks (Bjørgo, 2016). Such children and youth should be taught social norms and the dangers of crime. However, increasing the number of effective crime prevention strategies in society will face the challenge of inadequate resources and a lack of proper collaboration between law enforcement officers and members of the public due to unethical aspects, such as excessive use of force.
Regardless of the challenges involved in creating more effective crime prevention mechanisms, I believe that I will be a great criminal justice educator and teach about crime prevention in society. My future career goals include, teaching criminal justice and crime prevention at a community college in my hometown, I will focus on crime prevention to reduce the cost of crime in my community by addressing the problem before it occurs. I will use lessons from the textbook on crime prevention to teach students about crime prevention and practical strategies, such as those that focus on risk and protective factors.
