Week 2 course project: part 2 – describing communication patterns
In this example, the person escalated the communication challenge by demonstrating active listening and asking meaningful questions. To begin, they acknowledged how their co-worker was feeling in a genuine way by saying “I understand why you would feel that way” which validated the other person’s feelings. This is an important step in any conversation as it allows both parties to express themselves without judgement, leading to more open dialogue. Next, they asked follow-up questions about the situation , such as “What led you to believe that?” and “How does this affect our work?” These types of inquiries not only show that the speaker is actively listening but also provide insight into what might be causing the disagreement between them.
The individual then offered a potential solution to move forward with their argument while incorporating different perspectives. They said “Let’s look at both sides of this issue objectively and come up with a plan from there” This suggests collaboration on all parts where everyone involved can voice their concerns and share ideas for resolution without getting defensive or making assumptions about each other’s opinion.
All of these approaches demonstrate healthy communication skills when handling difficult conversations and are beneficial for fostering stronger working relationships between peers. By expressing empathy towards one another, engaging in active listening, and considering alternative solutions when resolving conflicts individuals are more likely to understand each other better on a deeper level resulting in effective communication within any team or organization.
