Patagonia is a clothing company that has a strong commitment to environmentalism and sustainability. I was able to explore one organization. They address environmental issues in clothing by using recycled material, decreasing water use and encouraging regenerative farming. Their social sustainability agenda includes supporting local environmental and grassroots organizations, as well as promoting fair labor practices.
Patagonia might be taking risks in prioritizing sustainability practices. They may also have to increase production costs. And, potentially, alienate consumers who place more importance on price than sustainability. These risks may be worth it from a business standpoint because they are consistent with Patagonia’s mission and values, as well as attracting consumers who value sustainability. In the long term, sustainability is a way to save money, improve reputation, attract and retain talent, as well as provide long-term financial benefits.
