According to American Academy of Pediatrics schools play an important role in providing adolescents with comprehensive education about sex. The reason is that adolescents receive information on sex often from their peers and media. This can prove unreliable, encourage unhealthy behavior and attitude, as well.
However, studies have shown that comprehensive sex education programs can be implemented in schools to reduce the likelihood of adolescents getting pregnant and transmitting sexually-transmitted infections (STIs). Programs like these can also promote healthy relationships and informed decision making, along with respect for diversity, consent, and good judgment (American Academy of Pediatrics 2018, 2018).
