According to some medical professionals, the medical model is still causing a wide range of disagreements. Although the medical model defines a disease as any significant deviation from biological normal functioning, with an emphasis on anatomy and physiology as well as biomedical components and biomedical components of that process, it doesn’t include concepts related to social sciences such as philosophy, sociology, or humanities. Physicians use this approach in diagnosing and prognosis. It leads to a reductionism in social science and disregard for it (Segal and al., 2013). Professors of humanities have harshly criticised this component. After intense discussions, a new age was born: “The new medical model” is more holistic and includes many treatment options on a larger scale.
In the United States, healthcare expenditures continue to rise at a faster rate than the country’s economic growth rate. Because of the apparent high cost of insurance, higher than average deductibles and co-pays, as well as out-of pocket payments, it is possible for an American family to face severe financial difficulties in the case that a chronic disease occurs. Researchers have done a study to determine the reasons for the rising cost of medical care. According to one statistician, by 2040, 1/5 of Americans will have reached 65. A rise in population and increased elderly populations contributes to an increase in healthcare expenditures. Chronic illnesses are more common in the elderly (Segal and co-authors, 2013). Health insurance, for example, has shown that increased use of diabetic medications has resulted in an increase in costs associated with managing the condition. All hospitals continue to have an increasing patient population, which results in higher costs. In the same way, annual premiums rose by 37% in 2015-2020. (Baumgartner et al., 2022). The strong demand has led to a significant increase in the amount of money that is associated with Medicare programs and Medicaid. These factors have led to an increase of healthcare costs in America. To protect patients and increase transparency and accountability for healthcare spending, Consolidated Appropriations Act (CACA) was passed.
