The opening of borders to Europe and its commitment for joint prosperity are making Europe’s culture more alike. Employees can now migrate to other countries to obtain better education or healthcare, thanks to the European Union’s expansion and formation. The constant mixing of people from different cultures promotes cultural assimilation. Also, the number of immigrants has increased, which indicates that society is becoming more multicultural. They are accepted into the community and embrace European values.
One benefit to civilizations becoming closer is their high level of cultural tolerance. Individuals learn to interact and adapt with people from different cultural backgrounds as they move to new areas. It is easier for people to let go of preconceptions or misconceptions about others. (Psychogiopoulou). Similarity leads to uniformity. This hinders creativity and critical thinking. It makes it easier to be critical of other cultures and perspectives.
My belief is that Europe’s immigration and growth has facilitated a convergence in European culture. The region becomes less homogeneous as people from different cultures move to Europe and settle there. Because its citizens share the same ideals, immigration makes it easier for Europe to establish a common language. It is likely that dominant civilizations will accept the minorities. My opinion is that similarities promote creativity. Similarity can lead individuals to think the same way, which may suppress different thought (Enn). Because of their commonality, people can live peacefully together. The downside is that similarities can cause the loss of national identities. This happens because when people migrate they become part the dominant culture and thus lose their nationality.
