It is important for nurses to evolve their roles and education to meet the needs of an aging and increasingly diverse population because this population has different health care needs than the general population, so they require more specialized attention. For example, as people age they may experience chronic conditions such as arthritis or diabetes that need to be managed properly. Additionally, nurses must be aware of cultural differences when caring for a diverse patient population in order to provide culturally competent care. This means understanding different values, beliefs, behaviors and expectations that a person might have based on their cultural background, which can influence how a nurse communicates with them and provides care. Furthermore, the elderly are often more vulnerable populations who may require additional help with activities of daily living such as bathing or dressing so it’s important for nurses to understand how best to support these individuals.
Evolving nursing roles and education also allows nurses stay current on advances in medical technology and research in order to incorporate these findings into their practice. By doing so they will be better equipped to provide high quality healthcare for all patients regardless of age or culture.
