The electoral process and government play a significant role in one’s daily work and family life. As nurses, health policy can significantly influence both arenas of our lives. Since the government has authority over healthcare regulations, they can have a large impact on how healthcare services are delivered to patients by setting standards of care as well as determining funding levels for various treatments or services.

For example, changes in Medicaid policies could affect nurses who work with low-income patients requiring more frequent visits or additional resources that may not be covered under the current system. Similarly, changes in Medicare reimbursement rates for certain procedures or medications could lead to higher costs being passed on to the patient which affects their quality of care received.

On a personal level, decisions made by the government affect day-to-day life within our families through programs such as Social Security disability benefits which provide short or long term assistance depending upon individual circumstances. Additional government initiatives like tax credits for medical expenses incurred during pregnancy or adoption also make it possible for individuals to access necessary medical care when needed while still keeping within their budget constraints. All these elements combined create an environment where nurses must remain informed on the ever changing policies so they are able to provide optimal care even when facing challenging scenarios due to limited resources available from outside sources like insurance companies or governmental organizations.
