The essential components of this assessment vary depending on the age of the child; for example, an infant’s developmental assessment typically includes observations of motor skills, language abilities ,social-emotional development ,and problem solving . Additionally ,a physical exam may be performed to check for abnormalities such as congenital defects or hearing/vision problems . For a toddler ,the focus shifts more towards cognitive & social-emotional milestones such as recognizing shapes/colors or playing cooperatively with other children . Lastly ,adolescents should have assessments which focus on academic performance ,behavioral health & sense of identity & self-esteem .
Ultimately by performing these assessments healthcare providers can ensure that infants, children, and adolescents are meeting their developmental milestones within a normal timeframe and intervene if need be. This type of preventive care is integral in promoting healthy outcomes throughout childhood and into adulthood.
