Group therapy with older adults
At the beginning of the session there were some initial resistances as members were hesitant to open up due to fear or embarrassment regarding their current situation. To help break the ice, I asked each person to share something positive they’ve experienced lately which helped create an atmosphere of openness and trust. From there we moved on to discussing challenges that have come up due to social distancing measures such as missing out on events or not being able to see family members.
Throughout this process I used reflective listening techniques by restating what others said in my own words so that everyone felt heard . Additionally , I also encouraged them stay present moment through mindfulness practices like deep breathing relaxation exercises when needed . Despite initial resistance all participants appeared be engaged comfortable engaging conversation by end session .
Overall working with this particular population can pose certain challenges due its inherent vulnerability sensitive topics discussed during group . Therefore it important facilitator establish sense safety belonging from very start ensure everyone feels secure enough express themselves freely without feeling judged .
