Apostrophes are punctuation marks that are used to indicate possession or contraction. In formal writing, they should be used to indicate possession (e.g., the professor’s desk) or contractions (e.g., don’t, can’t). Apostrophes also have a few other uses in informal writing such as indicating plurals of numbers and letters (e.g., two 8’s) or possessive pronouns that lack an antecedent (e.g., there’s).
In general, apostrophes should always be used when indicating possession or contractions in formal writing as it helps clarify meaning and allows for better readability and understanding among readers. However, they should be avoided when making plurals of most words which do not end in “s”; instead, simply add “-s” without an apostrophe at the end of the word (e.g., cats not cat’s). Additionally ,apostrophes should never be used to indicate a plural form unless it is for numbers & letters . For example ,it would be incorrect to write apple’s when referring to multiple apples ;instead one would write apples . Ultimately, by properly using apostrophes one can ensure their writing is clear & concise while avoiding potential confusion amongst readers .
