In my practice setting, the concept of self-efficacy, as proposed by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, is often manifested. Self-efficacy is an individual’s belief in their own ability to succeed or achieve a goal and it plays a key role in how people interact with their environment. In my practice I see this concept manifest itself when working with patients who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension. They often struggle with making lifestyle changes due to a lack of confidence in their ability to manage the condition on their own which can lead to poor adherence rates or difficulty adhering to treatment plans.
To address this issue I work with these patients to build up their self-efficacy by providing them resources and support while also helping them understand why certain treatments are necessary for optimal health outcomes. This approach has been successful for many of my patients as it allows them to feel more empowered and confident about taking control of their healthcare so that they can better manage their conditions over time. Ultimately this demonstrates how concepts from social cognitive theory can be applied in real world settings which ultimately leads to improved health outcomes for those involved.
