In this case, the study was in violation of the AICPA’s Code of Professional Conduct. The code states that all members must be “fair and honest in all professional relationships” which includes any research they conduct. However, the researchers failed to disclose their conflict of interest by not informing participants that they had a financial stake in the outcomes of the study. This caused them to be perceived as biased which resulted in a lack of trust from participants and ultimately compromised the results.
Additionally, it is clear that the researchers did not adhere to ethical standards when it comes to conducting research as they failed to obtain informed consent from participants or provide sufficient information about potential risks associated with participation. These actions are in direct violation of the AICPA’s Code as well as federal regulations for conducting research involving human subjects. Ultimately these issues could have potentially serious consequences for both parties involved so it is essential that proper procedures are followed whenever possible.
