Public health is an interdisciplinary field concerned with promoting and protecting the health of populations. It functions at the local, state, and national levels in order to ensure that each community has access to the resources necessary for good health.
At the local level, public health services are provided by county or city governments which employ public health nurses, physicians, epidemiologists and other professionals who work to improve community healthcare access. These services include providing vaccinations and screening programs; educating communities on healthy lifestyle choices; monitoring infectious diseases; supplying clean drinking water; enforcing food safety regulations; developing emergency preparedness plans; and managing waste disposal.
At the state level, public health departments provide oversight on a variety of issues such as policymaking, regulation enforcement, workforce development, research coordination, program evaluation and funding allocation. The federal government also plays an important role in setting standards for public health at both state and local levels through agencies like the CDC which provides guidance on a wide range of topics including infectious disease surveillance and control.
