Discussion: influencing social change | Nursing homework help
I completely agree with your statement that advocating for better care for mental health patients can positively impact other vulnerable populations such as the homeless and those suffering from substance abuse. It is important to recognize that many individuals struggling with homelessness and addiction may have underlying mental health issues that contribute to their current state. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) emphasizes the importance of treating both mental health and substance use disorders simultaneously, as they are often interrelated and can impact one’s ability to achieve recovery (SAMHSA, 2016).
To effectively address the issue of mental health, it is essential to not only focus on treatment, but also on prevention and early intervention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights the importance of addressing risk factors early on, such as adverse childhood experiences and social determinants of health, to prevent the development of mental health disorders later in life (CDC, 2019). By promoting access to mental health services and resources, as well as addressing underlying risk factors, we can work towards reducing the prevalence of mental illness and improving overall well-being.
