The components of professional nursing described in Chapter 1 of Leddy & Pepper’s Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing (8th ed.) include: knowledge, skills, and values. Knowledge is essential for nurses to be able to provide quality care and stay current on advancements in healthcare practice. This includes understanding the various pathologies and treatments used to care for patients as well as being able to effectively communicate information with colleagues and other health professionals. Skills are necessary for nurses to be able to apply their knowledge base and provide competent care such as physical assessment techniques or administering medications safely. Values are an important part of professional nursing because they guide how a nurse treats their patients as well as how they interact with others within the healthcare community. Examples include respect, integrity, advocacy, justice, empathy, emotional intelligence etc… All three components work together in unison allowing nurses to foster relationships with those they serve while delivering proper care that meets the standards set forth by their profession.
