State nurse practice agreements | Nursing homework help
Legally speaking, many states have laws that limit the scope of practice for PMHNPs; such as requiring them to work under supervision or having restrictions on prescribing certain medications. In addition, insurance companies may also pose challenges by refusing coverage for treatments provided by nurse practitioners or denying reimbursement at a rate similar to that offered for doctors performing similar services. Finally, state governments may be unwilling or unable – either financially or due to lack of manpower –to implement necessary changes within existing statutes in order allow PMHNPs greater autonomy.
Overall then, these various factors create significant barriers for those wishing to practice independently as a PMHNP in my state; however with increased awareness and better resources it is hoped these obstacles can eventually be surmounted so more individuals can access quality healthcare from well-trained professionals.
