Leadership in Diverse Situations (graded) Nurses demonstrate leadership in many situations. For this discussion, select one of the following situations that you have not previously experienced and tell us how the nurse would demonstrate leadership in that.
One situation in which a nurse could demonstrate leadership is with the development of a new policy or procedure. With any change to existing policies and procedures, it can be difficult to navigate conflicting opinions and differing views on how best to implement these changes. As such, it is important for nurses to take a lead role when creating or updating protocols given their knowledge of patient care standards as well as their familiarity with the healthcare system.
In order to approach this task effectively, nurses should first seek out input from all stakeholders including nurses, doctors, patients and administrators who might be affected by the implementation of this policy; doing so allows everyone involved to have their voice heard while providing insight into potential areas of concern that may not have been considered before. Additionally, gathering information about current practices related to the particular policy being developed can also help identify any gaps or inconsistencies that need addressing during its creation.
Once all necessary information has been gathered then the nurse can begin developing a plan for implementing the new protocol taking into account any feedback received along with relevant research. A key aspect here is ensuring there are clear criteria set for measuring effectiveness once implemented; this way if adjustments need making then they can be done quickly which helps reinforce trust among those involved in its production. Ultimately by leading this process successfully it allows everyone within the organization benefit from improved quality of care while simultaneously creating an environment where future ideas can flourish going forward.
