Discussion: treatment of psychiatric emergencies in children versus | NURS 6660 – Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Role I: Child and Adolescent | Walden University
A key aspect of working with children is using age-appropriate language; this involves breaking down complex topics into smaller pieces so that they can understand it better, providing concrete examples or analogies when possible. When discussing difficult issues I would also use metaphors, illustrations or cartoons to help explain concepts in an easier way. Additionally, activities such as play therapy are often helpful for younger clients who may find it hard to communicate verbally about their concerns.
It is important not to expect too much from young clients; instead focus on helping them learn coping strategies that will remain useful throughout life. Since children tend have less insight and awareness of behaviours, exploring ways in which they can make positive changes in their lives becomes more important than delving deep into unconscious motivations behind these behaviours.
By understanding how developmental stage affects behaviour we are better equipped for dealing with challenging situations that arise during sessions with children or adolescents. Offering flexible session times as well encouraging parental involvement will also benefit the process of therapy overall
