The three classes of drugs impacting the hematopoietic system are antineoplastic agents, immunosuppressants, and growth factors. Antineoplastic agents work by inhibiting cell division which can be used to treat disorders such as cancer or leukemia. Immunosuppressants reduce inflammation in the body allowing for greater acceptance of foreign substances like transplanted organs. Finally, growth factors are used to stimulate production of certain cells such as red blood cells – aiding in conditions that cause anemia.
One medication from these three classes is Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF) which is a type of growth factor used to treat low white blood cell counts due to chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation. This drug works by stimulating the bone marrow’s production of white blood cells known as granulocytes which helps prevent infection while also improving recovery times in those undergoing treatment for cancer.
