Theories on motivation can be broadly categorized into intrinsic and extrinsic, though other perspectives have been proposed in recent years. Intrinsic motivation is defined as the internal desire or drive to complete tasks which are seen as interesting or satisfying. This type of motivation often comes from a sense of accomplishment or pride in one’s work and does not rely on external rewards for satisfaction. Extrinsic motivation on the other hand refers to behavior that is driven by external factors such as rewards, recognition, money, etc.
In addition to these two categories there are also theories which focus on self-determination such as goal setting theory where individuals set specific goals they want to achieve while others focus on social contexts like Self-Determination Theory which examines how certain relationships influence an individual’s drive or determination. Finally, some newer theories look at more complex concepts such as purposeful motivating orientations which consider how motivations can change over time depending on different life circumstances and experiences.
