Based on evidence-based research findings related to my clinical question, “What is the most effective method for improving medication compliance among elderly patients?”, I have determined that patient education is one of the best ways to improve adherence. It has been found that providing elders with clear explanations about why they are taking a certain drug and what potential side effects they may experience can help increase their understanding and willingness to comply with prescribed treatment regimens.
Therefore, I suggest that nurses incorporate patient education into their practice in order to better ensure medication compliance among elderly patients. This could include having conversations about medications during routine visits or providing written materials (such as pamphlets) which cover topics such as purpose/dosage/side effects; setting up follow-up appointments where progress can be monitored; and referring patients to support groups or other resources if needed. In addition, nurses should also make sure that any questions or concerns expressed by patients are addressed promptly so that there is no confusion regarding how best to handle their care. Integrating these strategies into nursing practice will help provide better outcomes for elderly individuals while ensuring safe and effective use of medications.
