During my observation, I was able to identify the Care Model as the predominant model of nursing care. The Care Model is based on a patient-centered approach which emphasizes providing personalized care that takes into account individual needs and preferences. This was evidenced by the nurse’s focus on addressing each patient’s unique situation and responding in ways that best suited their particular circumstances—such as offering a blanket for an elderly woman who mentioned feeling cold or talking with a younger man about his recent move to a new city.
The nurse also seemed to be keenly aware of her role in supporting patients’ autonomy and self-care capabilities; she would often ask questions such as “Is there anything else you need? What do you think we should do next? How can I help?” She even inquired about whether they had any spiritual or cultural beliefs that might guide their decisions. Further, she demonstrated this respect for autonomy by allowing patients to make decisions regarding their own care despite risks involved.
