The meta-paradigm of nursing is a set of concepts that define the profession and guide practice. It consists of four components: environment, health, person, and nursing. The environment encompasses physical, social, cultural, economic and political influences on individuals’ health experiences. Health refers to a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being rather than an absence of disease or infirmity; it is an individual’s capacity to adjust to life situations and cope with change.
The person includes biological dimensions such as genetics; psychological dimensions such as beliefs and behaviors; sociocultural aspects like culture and ethnicity; spiritual dimensions like faith practices; economic aspects like financial resources available; environmental factors such as access to health care services; all working together in determining how wellness is attained. Nursing focuses on providing direct patient care through assessment and promotion of patient outcomes while also coordinating other healthcare providers involved in the patient’s care plan. As nurses engage with their patients from a holistic perspective—they must take into account the biopsychosocial factors that may impact a person’s wellbeing in order for them to receive quality care.
