Additionally, malfunctioning organs may produce hormones that are out of balance or have negative effects on adjacent tissues.
Organ Level: On the organ level diseases manifest as changes in organ structure or function. These can range from atrophy (shrinking) due for lack of use/stimulation to hypertrophy (enlargement) due excessive strain; both scenarios can have serious repercussions if left untreated. Similarly, some organs may stop producing certain substances while others might become overactive depending on underlying conditions.
