Week 3 discussion: email etiquette
Email has had two major impacts on interpersonal communication: it has enabled people to connect with others more quickly and easily, and it has shifted the focus of communications away from face-to-face interactions. The ability to send messages electronically means that individuals no longer have to wait for a response as they would when using traditional methods such as mail or telephone; in addition, conversations no longer need to be confined to physical proximity which allows for greater flexibility in connecting with contacts that may be located far away. While this is beneficial for staying in touch with family and friends, it can also lead to an over-reliance on digital forms of communication.
Advantages associated with communicating by email include its convenience (as messages can be sent at any time) and affordability (as there are generally no additional costs involved). Furthermore, emails provide a record of all past conversations which makes them easy to reference or search through if needed. Disadvantages include potential misinterpretations which can occur due language being used without context or tone; difficulty conveying emotion due to lack of facial expressions/body language; and risks associated with sensitive information becoming compromised when sent electronically.
