1. Provide patient-centered care: This competency involves understanding and respecting the values, preferences, and needs of patients and their families. Nurses should work collaboratively with patients to create individualized care plans that promote health and wellness. In my nursing practice, I can demonstrate this competency by actively listening to patients and their families, involving them in decision-making, and advocating for their rights and preferences.
2. Work in interdisciplinary teams: This competency involves collaborating with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients. Nurses should understand and appreciate the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals and work together to improve patient outcomes. In my nursing practice, I can demonstrate this competency by communicating effectively with other healthcare professionals, sharing information and resources, and participating in interdisciplinary meetings and rounds.
3. Employ evidence-based practice: This competency involves using the best available evidence to inform clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes. Nurses should be able to critically appraise research studies and apply evidence-based interventions in their practice. In my nursing practice, I can demonstrate this competency by keeping up-to-date with the latest research in my field, using evidence-based guidelines and protocols, and participating in research activities.
4. Apply quality improvement: This competency involves identifying areas for improvement in healthcare processes and systems and using data to implement effective solutions. Nurses should be able to collect, analyze, and interpret data to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery. In my nursing practice, I can demonstrate this competency by participating in quality improvement projects, using data to identify areas for improvement, and implementing evidence-based interventions to improve patient care.
5. Utilize informatics: This competency involves using technology to support patient care, education, and research. Nurses should be able to use electronic health records, patient portals, and other technological tools to improve patient outcomes and communication. In my nursing practice, I can demonstrate this competency by using electronic health records to document patient care, accessing and interpreting patient data, and using telehealth and other technological tools to communicate with patients and healthcare professionals.

In terms of examples, my workplace exemplifies the competency of working in interdisciplinary teams. We have regular interdisciplinary meetings where we discuss patient care plans and collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, social workers, and physical therapists. However, my workplace can improve in the area of utilizing informatics. While we have electronic health records, there is a lack of training and education on how to effectively use them to improve patient care and communication.
