Module 06 discussion – common medication-nutrient (food) interactions
When taking certain medications, it is important to be aware of any potential drug interactions that could occur. One example is a medication called Warfarin which is used to prevent blood clots and help manage stroke risk. If taken with certain foods or supplements, it can increase the risk of bleeding or other serious side effects. Foods to avoid while taking Warfarin include green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, vitamin K-rich foods like beef liver, dark chocolate and avocados. Additionally cranberry juice, grapefruit juice and alcohol should also be avoided since they can interfere with the effectiveness of the medication.
When providing client education regarding these interactions, it is important to emphasize the importance of avoiding certain food items as well as emphasizing diet restrictions as needed if indicated by healthcare provider. It may also be beneficial going over proper storage procedures with patient so they know how keep medication safe out light heat sources which can reduce its potency over time otherwise.
