Health promotion: case study module 12
Date rape drugs refer to substances that are used in drug facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) which can cause individuals to become incapacitated or unable to defend themselves against unwanted advances. Commonly used date rape drugs include Rohypnol, Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), & ketamine all of which have sedative properties making them ideal for such purposes. These substances usually come in the form of either pills or liquids and can be easily administered without an individual’s knowledge as they are often colorless, tasteless, odorless and dissolve quickly once ingested.
Furthermore, these drugs take effect very quickly typically within 10-15 minutes thus making it difficult for victims to recognize any symptoms until it is too late; this is why it is important for people to be aware of their surroundings when out socializing with friends or colleagues so as not fall victim to any potential predators. All together these characteristics demonstrate how dangerous date rape drugs can be & why individuals need exercise extreme caution if ever presented with a suspicious looking drink in order protect themselves from harm.
