The four major hormones produced in early pregnancy are Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), Estrogen, Progesterone, and Relaxin. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is secreted by the placenta and helps to maintain the lining of the uterus in preparation for implantation of a fertilized egg. Estrogen is responsible for increasing blood flow to the uterus and breasts, stimulating growth of ovarian follicles, and promoting fetal development. Progesterone also helps to increase uterine lining thickness as well as promoting mammary gland development in preparation for breastfeeding. Finally, Relaxin increases joint elasticity which allows for dilation of the cervix during labor.
