The nursing topic I have selected is patient education on the importance of medication adherence. Medication non-adherence is a major issue among many individuals taking prescribed medications, leading to increased health risks and higher costs for both patients and healthcare providers alike. This topic is especially relevant for nurses as it directly impacts their ability to provide quality care for those in need. By educating patients about the importance of following through with their treatments as prescribed, nurses are able to ensure that each person can receive the best possible outcome from their medical plan.

For all three learner groups (novice, proficient, and expert), there are specific characteristics related to how they approach this particular nursing topic. Novices may be unfamiliar or unaware of what medication adherence looks like which would require more detailed instruction in order for them to understand why this issue is so important. Proficient level learners may already have some knowledge regarding medication adherence but may still benefit from further information on how best support those struggling with taking medications regularly; meanwhile experts are likely very familiar with this topic but could still learn more about interventions that have been shown effective such as involving family members when providing patient education.
