Objective Slide:
The objective of this presentation is to discuss the necessary emergency supplies and personal emergency plan for older adults (OA) living independently without services and why this is important.
Necessary Emergency Supplies for OA:
- Water: At least one gallon of water per day per person for at least three days.
- Food: A three-day supply of non-perishable food items such as canned goods, protein bars, and dry fruits.
- Medications: A week’s supply of prescription medicines and medical supplies.
- First Aid Kit: Include items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gloves, gauze, and thermometer.
- Personal Care Items: Sanitation and hygiene items such as hand sanitizer, soap, tissues, and toilet paper.
- Emergency Supplies: Flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, and a battery-powered radio.
- Important Documents: Keep copies of important documents like identification, insurance policies, and emergency contacts in a waterproof container.
OA Personal Emergency Plan:
- Create a list of emergency contacts and keep a copy in the wallet.
- Identify a safe place to go during an emergency and share the address with family and friends.
- Keep a printed map of the area with evacuation routes and shelter locations.
- Write down medical conditions and allergies in a visible place.
- Discuss the emergency plan with family and friends.
Importance for Independent OAs:
- Older adults living independently without services are vulnerable during emergencies.
- Having a personal emergency plan and necessary supplies can help them stay safe and healthy during an emergency.
- It gives them peace of mind and a sense of control in uncertain situations.
