First, review the patient’s symptoms and medical history provided in the case study. Identify any cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary pathophysiologic processes that could be contributing to the patient’s symptoms. This may include conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pulmonary embolism, among others.
Next, consider any racial/ethnic variables that may impact the patient’s physiological functioning. Certain populations may be more susceptible to certain cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and may respond differently to treatments. For example, African Americans have a higher incidence of hypertension and are at increased risk for heart disease, while Native Americans have higher rates of COPD.
Finally, analyze how the identified cardiovascular and respiratory processes interact to affect the patient’s overall health. For example, a patient with COPD and heart failure may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, and difficulty with physical activity due to the combined effects of reduced lung function and impaired heart function.
