Clinical Issue of Interest:
The clinical issue of interest is the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in reducing symptoms of depression in adolescents.
Search Results:
Using the search terms “adolescents,” “depression,” and “cognitive-behavioral therapy,” a total of 10 original research articles were identified from two different databases. When additional search terms were added using Boolean operators (e.g., “AND,” “OR,” “NOT”), the number of articles returned decreased. For example, when the search term “music therapy” was added using the “AND” operator, the number of articles returned decreased from 10 to 5.
Strategies for Increasing Rigor and Effectiveness of a Database Search:
To increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search, one strategy is to use a systematic approach, such as the PICO(T) format. By clearly defining the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Timeframe of the research question, it becomes easier to identify relevant articles and exclude irrelevant ones. Another strategy is to use a variety of search terms, including synonyms and related terms, to capture all possible relevant articles. Finally, it is important to use the advanced search options offered by the database to further refine the search, such as limiting the search to peer-reviewed articles or specifying a date range for the search.
