Health care reform has played a significant role in shifting the focus of the health care system from one that is primarily focused on treating diseases to one that emphasizes wellness and prevention. This is because health care reform has placed greater emphasis on value-based care, which rewards providers for helping patients stay healthy and avoid costly hospitalizations.
One way in which health care will continue to shift towards wellness and prevention is through the use of technology. For example, wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smartwatches can help patients monitor their health and make positive lifestyle changes. Additionally, telehealth services can allow patients to receive preventive care and health education without having to leave their homes.
Nursing plays an essential role in supporting and facilitating this shift towards wellness and prevention. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients seeking care, and they can provide education and resources to help patients maintain good health. Additionally, nurses can collaborate with other health care professionals to develop and implement wellness and prevention initiatives, such as community health programs and workplace wellness programs.
One example of a wellness and prevention initiative in my specialty area is the development of a diabetes prevention program. This program provides education and resources to help patients make positive lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity, to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the program provides regular follow-up and support to help patients maintain these lifestyle changes over time.
