The research article selected for this post is “Experiences of Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment in Assisted Living: A Systematic Review” by Dabelko-Schoeny, Anderson, and Rubinstein (2020). The study aimed to explore the experiences of older adults with cognitive impairment residing in assisted living facilities. A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant studies, and a comprehensive search strategy was used to obtain articles published between 2008 and 2018. The study sample comprised 23 articles that met the inclusion criteria, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
B.
The sampling method used in this study was a systematic review, which is a rigorous and comprehensive approach to identifying, appraising, and synthesizing all relevant studies on a particular topic. Systematic reviews aim to minimize bias and increase the generalizability of the findings by using explicit and transparent methods to search for, select, and analyze studies. Therefore, the sampling method used in this study was effective in ensuring that all relevant studies were included in the analysis, thereby enhancing the internal and external validity of the findings.

According to Polit and Beck (2021), systematic reviews are considered the gold standard in evidence synthesis because they use a transparent and rigorous approach to identifying, appraising, and synthesizing all relevant studies on a particular topic. By using a comprehensive search strategy and inclusion/exclusion criteria, systematic reviews aim to minimize bias and increase the generalizability of the findings. Therefore, the sampling method used in this study was effective in ensuring that all relevant studies were included in the analysis, thereby enhancing the internal and external validity of the findings.

When reading the research study, three key questions that I would ask and answer are:
- What were the inclusion and exclusion criteria for selecting studies in the systematic review? This question is important because it helps to determine the quality and relevance of the studies included in the review.
- What were the themes that emerged from the data analysis? This question is important because it provides insights into the experiences of older adults with cognitive impairment in assisted living facilities.
- What are the implications of the findings for practice and policy? This question is important because it helps to identify areas where improvements can be made in the care and support of older adults with cognitive impairment in assisted living facilities.
When responding to peers, other questions and answers that could be considered in relation to their studies include:
- What was the sample size and composition, and how representative is it of the population of interest?
- What were the strengths and limitations of the sampling method used, and how might they have influenced the findings?
- Were any sampling biases present, and how were they addressed in the study design and analysis?
