As a nurse specializing in hospice care, identifying knowledge gaps in my nursing practice is essential in ensuring that patients receive optimal care. One process that I employ in identifying knowledge gaps is through the evaluation of current evidence-based practices. This involves reviewing current literature, such as peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, to determine whether my knowledge and practice align with current research. Additionally, I attend conferences and professional development sessions to gain further knowledge in hospice care.
To overcome knowledge gaps, I employ various strategies such as seeking mentorship and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Seeking mentorship from experts in my field provides me with a better understanding of the current evidence-based practice and helps me identify areas that need improvement. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as hospice physicians, social workers, and chaplains, allows for a holistic approach to care, which ultimately leads to better patient outcomes.
As a leader in healthcare, I will maximize others’ potential as they overcome knowledge gaps by providing resources for professional development and opportunities for collaboration. As a leader, I will support my team in attending conferences, workshops, and other professional development sessions. I will also provide a supportive environment that encourages collaboration, which fosters teamwork and enhances patient care.
To lead evidence-based practice at my workplace, I will begin by implementing an evidence-based practice committee that will be responsible for reviewing current evidence-based practices and identifying areas that need improvement. I will also encourage research projects and scholarly activities, such as poster presentations and publications, that will contribute to the knowledge base in hospice care.
Understanding and using the new information learned in this course contributes to my practice readiness as a DNP-prepared nurse by providing me with the knowledge and skills to critically appraise current literature and implement evidence-based practices in hospice care. The ability to differentiate between types of inquiry, research, QI, and evidence-based practice literature enables me to identify and appraise current literature more effectively, leading to better patient outcomes. Additionally, understanding the importance of professional formation and leadership skills will enable me to develop an effective team that provides quality care to hospice patients.
