Written Reflection:
In my week eight discussion, I developed a moral theory that focused on the importance of promoting well-being and minimizing harm for all individuals. I believe that the ethical theories of consequentialism and virtue ethics best apply to my moral theory. Consequentialism emphasizes the importance of the consequences of actions in determining their ethical value, while virtue ethics focuses on the character traits that lead to ethical behavior.
Applying my personal moral philosophy to Jane Doe’s case, I believe that what she did was unethical. As someone in a position of authority, she had a responsibility to act in the best interests of her students, and her actions were motivated by personal gain rather than concern for their well-being.
I believe that some of the examples of ethical transgressions presented in the course are more grave than others. For example, actions that directly harm others, such as sexual assault or discrimination, are more serious than actions that are simply selfish or dishonest.
In terms of social action and a solution, I believe that utilitarianism could be a helpful framework. This would involve taking into account the interests of all individuals affected by the situation and maximizing overall happiness. One potential solution could be to implement clearer guidelines and consequences for ethical violations in educational settings, as well as offering more support and resources for students who are struggling.
Oral Presentation:
Taking a course in Ethics has been a transformative experience for me. Initially, I was unsure about how relevant ethics would be to my personal and professional life, but I quickly realized that ethical considerations are present in almost every decision we make.
Throughout this course, I appreciated the opportunity to engage in discussions with my peers and learn from their perspectives. Hearing diverse viewpoints helped me to better understand the complexity of ethical issues and the importance of considering multiple perspectives.
In terms of whether healthcare workers should be required to take a course in Ethics, I believe that it is essential. Healthcare workers are often put in difficult ethical situations, and it is important that they have a strong foundation in ethical principles to guide their decision-making. Additionally, taking a course in Ethics can help healthcare workers to develop empathy and compassion for their patients, which can ultimately lead to better outcomes.
In conclusion, this course has been a valuable learning experience for me, and I believe that it has helped me to become a more thoughtful and ethical person.
