My professional beliefs about antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are that it is a complex and multifaceted condition which requires careful consideration of multiple factors in order to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Primarily, I believe that there needs to be an understanding of the underlying psychopathology associated with this disorder in order for clinicians to properly assess and diagnose individuals affected by ASPD (Rogers et al., 2019). Additionally, evidence suggests employing cognitive-behavioral therapies may improve certain symptoms such as impulsivity or aggression while also helping those affected gain insight into their behavior (Lobbestael et al., 2017; García-Portilla & Pérez-Testor, 2019).
Likewise, I think pharmacotherapy has potential to reduce some of the negative behaviors associated with this condition however more research is needed before strong conclusions can be made since there is currently limited evidence on its efficacy (Gómez-Restrepo et al., 2016). Furthermore I believe social factors must also be taken into account when addressing ASPD as these can have a major impact on how someone might behave over time.
Overall my professional views on ASPD are shaped by current scholarly literature which suggest that comprehensive assessment and tailored interventions addressing both psychological and social components are key in managing this disorder.
