The impact of an individual’s health definition on health promotion
Lifespan development refers to changes in physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning that occur throughout an individual’s life. These changes can influence how individuals define health at different stages of their lifespan. For example, a young child may consider themselves healthy if they are able to participate in physical activities with ease and without feeling overly fatigued. As the child grows older, his or her definition of health might shift to include psychological wellbeing such as managing emotions and having positive relationships with others. In adolescence, mental health may become even more important as teens explore their identity and work towards independence from parents or caregivers. Then again, in adulthood this definition might change yet again to focus on maintaining optimal physical health while also having productive career opportunities and financial security. Thus it is clear that how an individual defines health is largely influenced by their stage of lifespan development as well as other individual factors such as personal values or attitudes.
