The difference between an adjustment disorder and anxiety disorder is that adjustment disorders are caused by a specific external event or circumstance, while anxiety disorders can occur without any identifiable cause. Adjustment disorders involve a disruption in the individual’s psychological functioning due to an event such as death of a loved one, divorce, starting a new job, moving to a different location etc.; this disruption can manifest as depression, loneliness, inability to concentrate etc., but it typically resolves after the situation has been resolved. Anxiety disorders on the other hand can be more persistent; they are often linked to chemical imbalances in the brain which affect how we perceive and respond to situations around us. Symptoms of anxiety include restlessness or difficulty sleeping, increased heart rate/blood pressure, difficulty concentrating or making decisions etc. Treatment for both types of conditions involves support from friends/family members as well as professional help through therapy or medication if necessary.
