My professional experiences in dealing with patients who have been affected by domestic violence or child abuse has been both challenging and rewarding. I found that one of the muddiest points was helping these individuals understand that they were not to blame for what happened; this is often difficult because victims are so often made to feel like they did something wrong which can further reinforce feelings of guilt or shame. Additionally, another “muddy” point was trying to help them manage their trauma while also understanding why the perpetrator acted in such a way; many times perpetrators will use coercive control tactics which make it difficult for survivors to recognize early warning signs or take steps towards safety. Finally, providing resources and referrals for these individuals can be tricky due to potential financial obstacles as well as fear of being tracked down by the abuser if they seek outside help. Overall, I believe it’s important to approach these cases from both a personal and professional level in order to provide effective care while also showing compassion and empathy towards those affected by these terrible situations.
