Comprehensive assessment part one: competency matrix
The Competency Matrix is a tool used to assess a learner’s progress in meeting the competencies of a DNP program. The matrix includes a list of competencies, and learners can document evidence of how they have met each competency through their program coursework.
Here are some steps you can take to use the Competency Matrix to collect evidence of meeting selected competencies of the DNP program:
- Identify the competencies that you want to demonstrate you have met. For example, you might choose the competencies related to leadership, healthcare delivery systems, and patient safety.
- Review the Competency Matrix to see the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with each competency.
- Review your completed program coursework to identify evidence that you have met the competencies you selected. For example, you might identify a paper you wrote on leadership theories, a project you completed on improving healthcare delivery, and a presentation you gave on patient safety best practices.
- Document the evidence you identified in the Competency Matrix, making sure to include the specific coursework and assignments that demonstrate your competency.
- Review your documentation to ensure that you have provided sufficient evidence for each competency. You may need to revise or add to your documentation to ensure that it clearly demonstrates your achievement of each competency.
By using the Competency Matrix in this way, you can demonstrate your progress and achievement in meeting the competencies of the DNP program. This can be helpful for your own personal development, as well as for demonstrating your skills and knowledge to potential employers or colleagues.
