Depression symptoms in children may include changes in mood and behavior, irritability, withdrawal from activities that were previously enjoyed, loss of energy or interest in school work or hobbies, persistent sadness or lack of motivation, sleeping too much or too little, changes in appetite or weight, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Other physical signs include headaches, stomachaches and other aches and pains without any identifiable cause. Children may also become more easily frustrated than usual and have an increased risk for self-harming behaviors such as cutting themselves.
Children with depression may also show signs of impulsivity such as speaking before thinking which can lead to outbursts of anger or frustration. They may be excessively critical of themselves and display low self-esteem. In addition they may feel overwhelmed by everyday tasks like getting dressed for school or doing their chores as well as avoid social situations either due to fear of being judged or feeling inadequate compared to others.
It is important to note that many normal childhood behaviors can mimic the symptoms listed above so it is important to seek professional help if you suspect your child is experiencing depression so they can get the treatment they need. Early intervention can help reduce the severity and duration of depressive episodes allowing children to live healthy happy lives free from this often debilitating disorder.
