The nurse I selected is Florence Nightingale, who lived from 1820-1910. During her lifetime, she was a pioneer in nursing and public health reform. She is most well known for her work during the Crimean War where she drastically improved the sanitary conditions in British military hospitals, helping to reduce mortality rates among soldiers.

At the time Florence Nightingale lived, there were many social issues occurring both domestically and abroad which were of great importance. Domestically, poverty and poor working conditions were becoming increasingly prevalent as factories began to industrialize leading to larger cities with higher population densities than ever before. Abroad, imperialism was at its peak as European powers sought to expand their influence across the globe through colonization and trade agreements with foreign nations. Additionally, women’s rights movements were also gaining traction due largely in part to increasing literacy rates among females which allowed them more opportunities for self-expression and advocacy than ever before.

Overall, during Florence Nightingale’s lifetime many important social issues arose which continue to influence global politics today – from international relations and economic development to gender equality and human rights protection – making her contributions even more remarkable given how much they have endured over time despite all of these shifting dynamics.
