A recent evidence-based practice article examined the findings of a study on nursing interventions for suicide prevention and awareness. The study gathered data from questionnaires completed by nurses at one major medical center in Taiwan, with the aim of understanding how nurses perceived their role in intervening with suicidal patients. Results showed that although most nurses were aware of the risk factors associated with suicide, many lacked confidence in their ability to intervene effectively or felt unprepared to do so.

The majority of respondents agreed that psychological support was important for managing suicidal individuals, though few had received any specific training for this purpose or had regular access to mental health professionals. Furthermore, participants believed that providing clear information about available resources and strategies to prevent further crisis was an essential part of addressing suicide risk; however there were still gaps in knowledge regarding such resources among the nurse population. Finally, while all participants reported feeling confident in administering basic life support such as CPR and AED use during emergencies, they did not feel well-equipped when it came to recognizing warning signs before a potential crisis occurred.

Overall these findings suggest that more emphasis needs to be placed on educating hospitals’ nursing staff on best practices when dealing with suicidal individuals and ensuring they have access to appropriate resources when needed. Improving communication between doctors and nurses regarding patient care is also recommended as a means of better identifying those at risk early on so appropriate interventions can be provided quickly.
