One change that has had an impact on tobacco consumption is the introduction of smoke-free environments. Since many states have put in place laws banning smoking inside public buildings and establishments, it has drastically reduced the number of people who choose to smoke as it removes their ability to do so in certain places or around others. As a result, people are more likely to quit or reduce their consumption due to being unable to satisfy cravings while out and about.
A second change that has been seen is an increase in taxes on cigarettes which can deter smokers from purchasing them by making them more expensive. This was especially noticeable when California increased its cigarette tax back in 2017 which resulted in a decrease of over 7% in total sales within just two years after its enactment. This could be attributed to the fact that higher taxes make cigarettes more unaffordable for many people; thus discouraging them from buying and using these products.
